Highlights of our Careers Programme

Biennial Careers Fair

This academic year, we brought the world of work directly to our students at our biennial Careers Fair. Designed for Years 9 to 13, this event connects classroom learning with future career success.

Students attended talks led by industry leaders. These sessions offered real-world insights into highly competitive fields, including:

• Healthcare & Science: Medicine, Chemical Engineering, Psychology, and Research
• Professional Services: Law and Accountancy
• Creative & Technical: Journalism, Architecture and Higher/Degree Apprenticeships.

Our school hall hosted some of the local area’s biggest employers and institutions. Students networked directly with recruiters and admissions teams to discover entry requirements, placement opportunities, and future pathways.

• Industry: NHS, Unilever, Airbus, Scottish Power, and RSM.
• Education: Top institutions, including Russell Group Universities and local colleges
• Alternative Pathways: Leading degree apprenticeship providers offering earned-while-you-learn schemes.

This event is just one of the ways we prepare our students to lead, inspire, and thrive in the workplace.

British Science Week

Twelve Year 10 pupils experienced an inspiring British Science Week event at Liverpool John Moores University, featuring talks from female STEM professionals and a screening of the acclaimed film Hidden Figures. The visit highlighted the importance of perseverance, authenticity, and overcoming barriers in STEM careers, empowering students to pursue their ambitions.

CyberFirst Mega Event

On 9 December 2025, 30 of our talented Year 8 pupils headed to Boxpark Liverpool for the annual CyberFirst Mega Event. This high-energy day successfully blended cutting-edge technology with career-boosting skills, proving that the future of tech is anything but boring.

From a surprise morning disco with DJ Dex to hands-on tech challenges, our pupils threw themselves into every activity. They worked in teams to tackle real-world industry tasks, building critical skills in problem-solving, collaboration, and logical thinking.

Our pupils worked directly with leading regional employers throughout the day:

• Generative AI with Capgemini:

Students mastered the art of AI prompting to generate specific digital images. Upton pupils performed so brilliantly that many took home exclusive Capgemini prizes for their precision and creativity.

• Robotics & Coding:

Teams built custom LEGO robots from scratch, utilising advanced coding languages to programme them to run, crawl, and flip.

• Sphero Droids with Everton FC:

Combining sports analytics with computer science, students used 'Code Blocks' to successfully navigate spherical droids across a simulated football pitch.

This event was a perfect example of connecting classroom learning with major industry employers and our pupils discovered just how vital, and exciting cyber technology careers are becoming.

• Gatsby Benchmarks at Upton Hall School

The nationally recognised ‘Gatsby benchmarks’ of careers education are used by the school as a basis for setting our careers and employability strategy.   Expected key performance indicators (KPIs) are provided below for each key stage; the expectation is that the careers provision should have enabled students to achieve these by the end of each key stage.

This is based on the premise that every school and college should have an embedded programme of careers education and guidance that is known and understood by pupils, parents, teachers and governors (Gatsby benchmark 1).
