Spring in Paris was the experience of 16 Year 9 and 10 girls this year as they enjoyed the second leg of the French Exchange with our partner school – Fénélon Ste Marie – in Paris.

Monuments, history, art, shopping, French life and food were all ingredients of a very successful visit to Paris from 29 March to 5 April 2009. Our students became very adept at hopping on and off the metro as we spent the morning or afternoon visiting one of the sights of the city before heading back to school to savour the delights of the canteen or home for those lucky enough to enjoy home cooked dinners.

The unique feature of an exchange is, of course, living with a French family and really seeing what happens in real life, not just the surface glitter of monuments and museums. Our pupils now realise how school is different in France and England, how living in a big city has advantages and disadvantages and how in spite of linguistic differences you can make friends with people from different countries.
French parents were at pains to express to Mrs Hollifield how they enjoyed having our pupils in their homes, how polite, charming and lovely they were. Equally, our parents in Wirral have been delighted to get to know the pupils of Fénélon and one family has been invited, parents and all, to visit the family in Paris!

This is the third year of this very successful exchange programme and strong links are growing between staff and pupils of our two schools. Mrs Young has visited Fénélon and the Headteacher of Fénélon M.Combescure has spent a day in Upton to strengthen the links between our two establishments.

The whole community in Upton was involved in welcoming our Fénélon visitors in February when, unfortunately, snow rather than sun greeted our exchange partners. Happily, the warmth of our welcome made up for the cool weather! Staff in Upton gave willingly of their time to introduce our French partners to Flamenco Dancing, Viking Life, drama, pottery, Polish, trampolining, cooking of fairy cakes and much more.

Make sure that your daughter and family are determined to seize this wonderful opportunity to explore life in another country – Exchange 2009-2010 dates are to be confirmed by June 2009 and it is open to girls in Years 9 and 10.
