


The study of Art and Design leads to an understanding of the importance of design in everyday life. Currently, the creative industry in the UK is growing at a significant rate, and the demand for graduates with good specialist art and design skills is enormous.
GCE Art and Design - the updated four-unit structure:
Your work will be assessed by your teacher and then externally moderated. You will be expected to experiment with a range of media, materials and technology.
Summary of course structure:
AS Unit 1: Coursework unit. You will explore and respond to a theme. You will generate research and develop ideas, as well as develop the skills of analysis to help your own and others work.
AS Unit 2: Externally-Set Assignment: In addition to completing the 8-hour Examination, you will produce preparatory work that shows the development of your final piece.
A2 Unit 3: Coursework unit: This unit incorporates two linked elements – practical work and a written personal studyand builds on Units 1 and 2. The written element will explore historical and contemporary references involving first-hand investigation through visits to Art Galleries and Museums. You can produce an e-portfolio to support your studies.
A2: Unit 4: Externally-Set Assignment: In addition to completing the 12-hour examination, you will produce and submit preparatory work that shows the development of your final piece.
Students follow a studio-based Foundation Course in the first term of the course to learn techniques required for the Unendorsed course. Portfolio reviews take place every half-term. Holiday homeworks enable gallery visits and extension activities to support classwork.
A whole range of careers await the successful graduate of Art and Design, whether their interest is in Architecture, Animation, the Fashion Industry, Interactive design, Textile Design and Advertising.
All students applying for Foundation Courses have been successful in securing a place at the college of their choice. Two students recently gained places on the Foundation Course in Art and Design at Central St Martins in London.
Kate Collins, who left in 2004, has been offered a two-year contract to work with Vivienne Westwood.
