Upton Hall School

Wirral Holocaust Memorial Day

As part of the Holocaust Educational Trust’s annual Lesson’s From Auschwitz Project, two students from Upton Hall School visited Auschwitz and disseminated the lessons learnt to their school community, here at Upton as many schools across the North West have done. However, Vicky Brown L6 and Rachel Evans U6 also lead at the Wirral Holocaust Memorial Event, this year held at the Floral Pavilion on the 28th January. Students from all Wirral Schools were invited and Vicky and Rachel shared their experiences of the visit to the Nazi Death Camp with their fellow students and gave an insight into how the lessons are relevant to society today. They spoke eloquently but poignantly and they were excellent ambassadors for our school.

Following their presentation, Wirral Students had the opportunity of hearing Holocaust Survivor, Rudi Oppenheimer speak about his dark days as an inmate of Bergen-Belsen. The whole experience was very emotive and well received by students and teachers alike. Vicky and Rachel now hope to continue their work as ambassadors for the Holocaust Trust with the possibility of inviting a Holocaust Survivor to speak to parents and members of the local community and both are committed to ensuring they pass on the message in future endeavours, at University and beyond.

The coordinating teacher, Mrs Shore has worked closely with the Holocaust Trust as an Educator on the projects and looks forward to strengthening links with the school and working more closely with other local schools and beyond in the future, with a view to offering training on the teaching of the Holocaust to colleagues in other schools in the coming academic year
