Ski Trip to Saalbach 2012
A successful and exciting trip to Austria, took place during the Easter Holidays with pupils from Year 8 to Year 11, along with skiers and snowboarders, Miss Green, Mrs Page, Miss Taylor and Miss Millard snowboarding. We stayed in the lovely Austrian resort of Saalbach, the hotel was a typical Tyrolean chalet up the hill with lovely view of the resort.
Some pupils, a little apprehensive as they had only skied at the Chill factor soon got used to carrying their skis and poles down the hill, to the slopes. Nothing could beat the real thing...snow, mountains, sunshine and super instruction. The beginners, with their Slovenian instructor , Tina, started off on the nursery slopes but soon progressed up the gondola and down blue run 51 but everyone was up the mountains for lunch in the mountain restaurants.
The intermediate groups were a mix of non-skiers and those who had skied for a week, but by the Friday they had all found their ski legs and ‘Roc’ took them through the forests and down a few red runs as well as all the blue runs in the area. After six days skiing and 4 hours of instruction a day all groups had improved and Skier of the week was Lisa Beattie, who was part of the advanced group. The top group, had skied into different valleys, over to Leogang and Hinterglemm, they went so fast and so far away that they only returned to Saalbach with their instructor, Stefan, at the end of the day.
The skiing was what we expected, but the après ski was also great fun. A trip to Hinterglemm for Ice Creams....four scoops and a coke. An Ice Hockey match, watching the local polar bears.. a free sprite and lemonade and lots of music and shouting made for a highly entertaining evening to celebrate Meghan’s birthday. The following night we went bowling or to play Austrian Skittles, where the pins are held up by string. Midweek we needed to rest and recover as our muscles were starting to ache, so we headed for a beautiful spa in Kaprun..with an infinity pool, a freezing plunge pool, a salt water pool, and a hot Jacuzzi...what lovely way to relax. We finished the week off with an awards evening, held in a local pizza restaurant and our instructors Stefan, Roc and Tina were delighted to have been invited to present the awards.
What about the coach trip... worth the journey?...well ask the girls. The coach drivers Bill and Bill were brilliant, stopping at the best places along the way for us to have coffee, croissants or refreshments. We had quizzes, raffles and DVDs, the ferry was like a skiing youth club, everyone wearing their own style coloured hoodies and the coach trip was just a part of the whole travelling experience.
Want to go again Easter 2013.........well look out for the letter. We are returning to the Saalbach valley but to a different hotel in the village of Vorderglemm, the cost will be approx £850.00. If you are interested ask Miss Green for a letter.
