Diverse City

A photographic exhibition celebrating the City of Liverpool in photographs and words, seen through the eyes of its people.

Commissioned to mark the 80th anniversary of The Riverside Group in collaboration with Upton Hall School.

To celebrate the landmark year of 2008, this photographic exhibition has gathered together 55 subjects. These subjects include people who have moved away from the city, returning to share lasting memories of formative years spent in Liverpool, as well as newcomers who have settled in Merseyside and are contributing to a revitalized city.

Some of the subjects are well-known public figures from the media, the arts, politics and sporting life. Other subjects are asylum seekers and the homeless. All contribute to an exhibition that attempts to capture the diverse city that is Liverpool.

Subjects have been photographed and interviewed at locations in the city which have a significance and meaning for them. Their portraits have been captured by a range of local professional photographers.    



                          Gary Millar -
            Businessman & Entrepreneur


The interviews have been conducted by 6th Form students from Upton Hall. The students worked in pairs, devising and asking the questions with the interview recorded using the latest digital voice recording technology.

From the interview, transcripts of approximately 200 words were produced to be displayed alongside the photograph in the exhibition.

The exhibition is portable and has been displayed in Liverpool at the Echo Arena, in the Anglican Cathedral and the Liverpool Daily Post and Echo building.

The exhibition opens at the Williamson Art Gallery in Birkenhead on Saturday 11 July and will remain on display throughout the summer, closing on Saturday 5 September 2009.

Funds raised from the exhibition will be used to support The Whitechapel Project in their essential work helping the homeless people in Liverpool.
